I hoped I could gather some hints if this FAIL would have been related to 
the backend.

So judging from my debug session in 
http://egcs.cygnus.com/ml/egcs-bugs/1999-02/msg00442.html , there's still a 
problem in the loop unroller (if it is not as simple as adding a check for 
insn==NULL to single_set or can_reverse_comparison).
