egcs-2.93.08 compiles this code without warnings or errors, so this
appears to be a bug in 1.1 (note - I haven't even taken the time to
study your code). I'm not so sure whether the upcoming 1.1.2 has the
relevant bug fix; if this is important to you, you'd rather start
investigating and lobbying now.
