GNU Fortran 0.5.24-19980804: code slow

This is not a real bug report...

We are running a cluster of linux PC's (pentium pro). Recently we
have upgraded from 

     g77 0.5.19.1 / gcc 2.7.2.1

to   g77 0.5.24-19980804 / egcs-2.91.60

We are surprised that the new version of g77 (with -O3 -mpentiumpro
-funroll-loops -malign-double) produces object files
which will run significantly slower than the object files of the old
version of g77 (just with -O). On average the old executables are
faster by a factor of 1.5 - 2.
