It's probably anathema, but the current CVS version of the g77 manual tries to address this question. If it's worthwhile, perhaps someone could correct that bit and include it elsewhere. This is definitely an FAQ/Frequently Reported Non-Bug. I think the manual contains the relevant code to frob the FPU, but if not, I have it, hoping to get it into the distribution at some stage.
