I really have no strong preference for *how* we do this; I'm no expert
on the peculiarities of the various makes in existence.  

If you think the glibc test is good enough, that's fine by me.  I
think we should do *someting*; a little investment here will save us a
lot of time in the long run.  I suggested --version because that
output can certainly be used to determine whether or not the thing is
GNU make, but I don't have any idea whether or not that's the best or
most efficient test.
