I think you should avoid such configurations.

The problem with your patch is that it assumes that prefix specifies
a directory name.  It does not, it merely specifies a prefix.

So I believe the code is actually behaving in the expected manner
when presented with a builtin prefix of /opt/gnu and a passed in
path of /opt/gnu-solaris.
