f77 compile treats "\" as special.

Code which compiles on AIX, Solaris,Cray, NT, etc fails with Redhat 5.1
egcs-g77. Problem is that '\' is treated as the escape character and not
as a normal character.

e.g. the statement:

      DATA ITAB/2H\1/

does not compile.
