SGI IRIX 6.4 on Octane

When compiling egcs-1.0.3a I make it til:

stage2/xgcc -Bstage2/ -c -DIN_GCC -O2 -g -I. -I..
-I../../../egcs-1.0.3a/gcc/cp -I../../../egcs-1.0.3a/gcc/cp/..
-I../../../egcs-1.0.3a/gcc/cp/../config
../../../egcs-1.0.3a/gcc/cp/expr.c
as ERROR:  /usr/lib32/cmplrs/asm died due to signal 10
as ERROR:  core dumped
make[3]: *** [expr.o] Error 1
make[3]: Leaving directory `/opt/src/egcs-obj/gcc/cp'
make[2]: *** [cc1plus] Error 2
make[2]: Leaving directory `/opt/src/egcs-obj/gcc'
make[1]: *** [bootstrap-lean] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/opt/src/egcs-obj/gcc'
make: *** [bootstrap-lean] Error 2

Anytime the assembler gets invoked I also get this warning:

So...I'm stuck. I tried removing everything and rebuilding (making sure
I had enough disk space and all) but had the same result.

The largest possible difference I can think of is that the Octane is a
true 64 bit architecture.

Any help is appreciated...oh and here what I configured with:

../egcs-1.0.3a/configure --prefix=/opt/local/encap/egcs-1.0.3a
--without-gnu-as --without-gnu-ld
