19981012, sparc solaris bootstrap failure

This bootstrap failure of egcs-19981012.tar.gz happened on a
sparc-solaris2.5 using gnu make version 3.63 (and VPATH, build and
source directories different).  Upgrading to gnu make-3.77 has
apparently cured the problem.  But the old make has no trouble
building gcc2.

I thought it was supposed to be customary to function with antique
or native software tools (perhaps even with Sun's make program).
