has 1998-1005 changed rules for hpux --with-gnu-as?

I have verified, reinstalled binutils-2.9.1, and verified again that
as is located where it normally installs in the directory specified
using the same --prefix for both binutils and egcs, and that gcc
-print-search-dirs includes one of these directories.  Has
support for --with-gnu-as been withdrawn, or has the procedure
changed?
