extremely large expressions fail to compile

Please do.  gcc 2.7.2.3 is not egcs, nor is it representative any
more.  As I told you, I couldn't reproduce the problem with egcs 1.1,
so unless you show this problem really exists in your installation of
egcs 1.1 (and not any other previous version), it will be considered
fixed.
