problems with build

I previously had problems building egcs under freebsd which I have
since managed to avoid by using configure --host=i686-pc-freebsdelf
so that it used freebsd-elf.h to respect the conventions of gas --

configure seems to be creating some of the Makefiles with null characters
in them -- causing gmake to exit

Even when I remove then during gmake bootstrap after
./xgcc -B./ -S tmp-dum.c -- I get the following error:
ELF binary type not know. Use "brandelf" to brand it.
xgcc: Internal compiler error: program cpp got fatal signal 6

'brandelf -t "FreeBSD" xgcc' does not seem to fix the problem -- although
it does fix a similar problem with gencheck

Anyone have any suggestions?
