1.1.1 prerelease: annoying and suspicious warnings

These are all perfectly innocuous, AFAIK, though they're also rather
trivial to fix.  I'd have no objections to fixing them in 1.1.1, but
my impression is that we try to limit the fixes in such a release to
the absolute minium to fix real bugs, not just make the build output
prettier, which is also fine by me.
