I checked today and today's CVS snapshot does not exhibit this problem
any more: 

markab[104]:~% egcs -v
Reading specs from /sw/swtest/egcs/lib/gcc-lib/sparc-sun-solaris2.5.1/egcs-2.91.31/specs
gcc version egcs-2.91.31 19980525 (gcc2 ss-980502 experimental)
