non-lvalue in assignment c++ CVS-980522

It seems I stripped the file a bit too much, this one compiles with an
older version of c++ but not with egcs c++ of 980522.
I am using egcs-2.91.29 19980517, binutils-2.9.1.0.4, linux-2.1.103, glibc-2.0.7
configured with: --host=i586-linux --with-gnu-as --with-gnu-ld --enable-shared --enable-haifa
