19980502 on alphaev56-dec-osf4.0d: ld error with STL code

Some code of ours fails with the following linker error with the latest
snapshot on alphaev56-dec-osf4.0d. AFAIKS, this looks like STL stuff and
might be related to not having GNU ld available.
(Note that this is not a machine of mine, I just have guest access to
build distributable binaries, but I'll try to help in any way that might
be useful nevertheless...)
This seems to be some general problem and generating a minimal example
is non-trivial, but I could give it a try if necessary.
