Actually, I never use -d unless I know there's a new directory in
the repository.  Otherwise it will suck in directories that I may
have deleted because I didn't want them in the first place.

ie, consider if you've checked out everything except gcc/f and libf2c;
if you then cvs update -d, those directories will be checked out.

Just something to be aware of.
