g77 REWIND problem with named files

Has anyone run into or documented a problem with REWIND for
files which have been opened explicitly by an OPEN statement?
The code in question runs correctly in the pre-f77 mode, using
default file names fort.[12489]....   If not, I suppose I'll have to
come up with a test case.  It's an old code originally written in
IBM360 style but with some CDC6600isms added.  A real
example of the Fortran ethic; no professional programmer work,
but additions in the spirit of what engineers at every company in
our business have found to work.
