Why duplicate symbols in 1.0.1 and not 1.0 ???

Thanks to help from Jeff and Matthew (Wright) I can now create a
shared library (that uses STL containers) using egcs v1.0.1 under
HP-UX 10.20.

I have now also come up against the "Duplicate symbol"s problem.

I CAN work around this using -frepo, and get some lovely binaries.

However, we can't (or don't want to) use this solution in practice.

[We use a build system with VPATHing where the "master" node
in the VPATH is readonly. So -frepo fails because we, when
doing a local build further down the VPATH, do not have
write permission for the .rpo files]

What are the alternatives to -frepo? Some cunning plan concerning
explicit template instantiation?

Are you (the egcs developers) saying that "-frepo is THE solution
(end of story)", OR that the "Duplicate symbol"s problem is a bug
and that -frepo is a workaround until you (or SGI?) can come up
with a better solution?

What is the problem, by the way, and where does it lie? I've seen
some murmurings (and sniggering) about the HP ld?

Hilarity apart, please realise that this IS a serious problem for
those of us stuck on HPs and NOT wanting to use the HP aCC C++
compiler ...

Thanks for any hints,

    Graham.
