Why do you need autoconf for building egcs from the cvs-sources but not
for building it from the snapshots?

It's most likely a consequence of CVS. CVS checks out sources in
alphabetical order, which means that it checks out configure before
configure.in, which means that configure looks out of date with
respect to configure.in. It's probably not really out of date, it
just has the wrong time stamp. You can probably just touch configure,
rather than worrying about autoconf.

And by the way: Where can I get the autoconf-sources?

Any GNU archive site. prep.ai.mit.edu is the canonical one, and there
are plenty of mirrors all around the world.
