strange g77 bahviour (egcs-1.0.1 vs 980214)

I'm having problems using g77 on an alphaev5-unknown-linux-gnu. The
egcs-1.0.1 release works fine, only the bug using negative array
indices is annoying. So I want to use the 980214 snapshot (since this
bug is fixed in this one). So now I can use negative array indices,
but several other programs just crash with a floating
exception. Debugging gives me 'helpful' hints where the error is located:

      BDATA(4) = 0.0

????? Where is there a floating point exception ?????

I didn't compile with any special option (-mieee or anything) because
some programs wouldn't compile.

So I'm a bit lost now ... anyone had similar experiences?

Clemens
