This problem was in egcs until this patch:

Fri Feb  6 01:33:52 1998  Manfred Hollstein  <manfred@s-direktnet.de>

	* Makefile.in (BASE_FLAGS_TO_PASS): Don't pass PICFLAG and
	PICFLAG_FOR_TARGET.
	(EXTRA_TARGET_FLAGS): Don't pass PICFLAG_FOR_TARGET.

	* configure: Emit a definition for the new macro enable_shared
	into each Makefile.

	* config/mh-sparcpic (PICFLAG): Define to properly according
	to current multilib configuration.
	* config/mt-sparcpic (PICFLAG_FOR_TARGET): Define to properly
	according to current multilib configuration.

Unfortunately, the hunk for Makefile.in wasn't actually applied, only
mentioned in the ChangeLog :-(

Yesterday I added a patch which finally fixes this:

Mon Feb 16 12:23:53 1998  Manfred Hollstein  <Manfred.Hollstein@ks.sel.alcatel.de>

	* Makefile.in (BASE_FLAGS_TO_PASS, EXTRA_TARGET_FLAGS): Really add
	this change to sync Makefile.in with its ChangeLog entries.

If you have CVS access you should update; if not try the appended
patch, please. If it then still fails, please contact me, because the
problem you are seeing was the reason why I wrote this patch.

Thanks

Manfred Hollstein
