Well, I think there are two general directions:

  * shared libgcc.  Has some major drawbacks.  I need to review those
    drawbacks again.  Some may be fixed by moving libgcc out of libsubdir.

  * control of symbols exported by the library.  Biggest drawback is how
    to do this in some kind of semi-portable manner.
