So did I, and I couldn't find anything either, but the fact is that my
build of egcs 1.1.1 on IRIX 5.2 won't generate debugging information,
and it was built with exactly the same configure flags I used to build
egcs 1.1. Very weird...

One possibility is that automount may have fooled my install script so
that it thought GNU as was not available, and so it did not pass
--with-gnu-as down to configure. Another possibility is that it did
pass --with-gnu-as, but it failed to create the links to `as' in the
install and build tree, and so some configure test failed, disabling
debugging. I'm rebuilding egcs 1.1.1 now, and I'll post the results
no later than when I come back from the holidays.

BTW, Merry Chrismas and Happy New Year for you all!

It doesn't, egcs 1.1 and the latest snapshot generate debugging
information beautifully.
