It's in SGI STL's rope.h :-(

Unfortunately, not even the newer release of SGI STL, distributed in
the latest development snapshots of egcs, will compile with
-pedantic.  It's probably worth a bug report to the developers of SGI
STL, that egcs simply distributes as-is.
