egcs-1.1.1 on alphaev56-dec-osf4.0b: unresolved symbol __eprintf

After building egcs-1.1.1 with "configure --enable-shared" 
on a DEC AXP running DEC Unix 4.0b, upon linking some apps 
I got "unresolved symbol __eprintf".

Everything was fine after I removed the hardcoded 
"#define inhibit_libc" from gcc/libgcc2.c.
