This problem has been in for several snapshots.  The obvious work-around is to
reduce the optimization for this one subroutine to -O1.  BTW, I'm getting a
lot of new failures from an unrecognized instruction for testsuite cases
involving -O2 -funroll-loops.  Still checking and re-checking.
