Bootstrapping main and release fail on mips-sgi-irix6.2 (R8000)

Bootstrapping fails for the main and release branches of egcs on a
SGI-Powerchallenge (R8000) running mips-sgi-irix6.2.

Both branches were configured with the default settings and compiled
with `make bootstrap BOOT_CFLAGS="-g -O2"'

The main branch failed with an ICE at the compilation of f/expr.c:
stage1/cc1 /work/georg/tmp/cck3cZq5.i -quiet -dumpbase expr.c -g -O2 -W -Wall -version -o /work/georg/tmp/ccTXCCGK.s
GNU C version egcs-2.92.02 19980820 (gcc2 ss-980609 experimental) (mips-sgi-irix6.2) compiled by CC.

and the release branch fails make compare:
gcov.o differs
global.o differs
local-alloc.o differs
