possible problem in f77

In trying to compile the lapack libraries on an LX164 Alpha
(Microway-issue) 566MHz, it seems that the egcs 1.0.2 release f77 frontend
chokes on the dlarfx.f file (I have made the file available on
http://espresso.ee.sun.ac.za/~cpb/dlarfx.f ) if invoked with:
f77 -O2 -c dlarfx.f -o dlarfx.o
This seems reliably reproducible on my setup, and exits with the
following message:
f77: Internal compiler error: program f771 got fatal signal 11
I know of the normal implications of signal 11s, I've had flakey machines
before, but it doesn't seem to be the case with this box.
However, -O1 or -O compiles the file successfully. Anyting >= -O2 chokes
with the abovementioned error.
The system is running with almost stock RedHat 5.0, all updates, and
kernel 2.1.97. If anyone else could try compiling _just_ this file with
their egcs installations (on any architecture) and report, I'd be *very*
greatful.
Thanks a bunch!
Charl
