Thanks for your reply. Whatever it was, I can confirm that the current
CVS snapshot doesn't exhibit this problem any more under Solaris 2.6 with
Sun's as.

Just an idea: Wouldn't it be useful to print a diagnostic message during
./configure in such cases?
  "Assembler does not support exception handling. Automatically disabled."
or something like that?
