egcs-1.0 haifa abort on alpha linux kernel

You were cross-compiling from a 32-bit host maybe?  There are a
number of optimizations that get disabled there, and so might 
easily result in different rtl feeding the scheduler.  The abort
shows up on both branches, with spotless checkouts.
