egcs-1.0 haifa abort on alpha linux kernel

This shows up building the nfs client module on the Linux 2.1.74
kernel, so it'd be nice to get fixed before 1.0.1.  The version
of egcs is egcs_1_00_branch from yesterday, Dec 21.

Compile with -O2 -ffixed-8.

I'll be looking at it further myself, but hopefully someone else
will find it first.
