failed compiling egcs (x86-linux)

Hi,

I downloaded egcs-1.0 and tried to compile it under x86-Linux 2.0.30
(SuSE-distribution). Unfortunately I experienced the following error
message while building gcc:

  gcc -DIN_GCC -DUSE_GNULIBC_1 -g -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I../../../egcs/gc
  c -I../../../egcs/gcc/config \
  -DTARGET_MACHINE=\"i586-pc-linux-gnulibc1\" \
  -c `echo ../../../egcs/gcc/collect2.c | sed 's,^\./,,'`
cpp: Usage: /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i486-linux/2.7.2.1/cpp [switches] input output
  make: *** [collect2.o] Error 1

I have gcc-2.7.2.1 and binutils-2.8.1.0.18; I found nothing apropriate
in the FAQ or in the mailing list archive. Has anyone a clue what I
am doing wrong? Or if not, is there a version of egcs precompiled for
Linux anywhere?

The README said I should do "make" for building, the online-docs said
"make bootstrap". Is there a difference between these two? (I tried
both and get errors in both, anyway).

Could you respond CC to me private; as I have only slow telephon-connection
to WWW, I cannot stand the load of the egcs-list.

Thanks in advance,
  Lars
