which underscores my point. :)  At age 50, I can’t remember the various 
protocols of different mailing lists. (Truthfully, I couldn’t remember this
information before 50 either.)  I estimate that roughly 30-40% of the
time, I forget that the gfortran mailing requires plain text and
then I have to resend the message because I mistakenly sent my default 
format, which is not plain text.  

My mail client doesn’t show me column widths.  If I’m going to truncate 
at 80 characters reliably, my first thought is to write the email in a 
terminal window set to 80-character widths.  I’m open to other suggestions 
with the caveat that the number of steps required to send a message is 
inversely proportional to the likelihood of sending the message at all 
— which could easily be a bug or a feature, depending on whether anyone 
wants to hear from me. :)
