See my comment to pr77391: I vote for none. Note that compiling

program picky
character(len=*):: ident1="@(#)one(3f): with asterisk"
character(len=:):: ident2="@(#)two(3f): with colon, which appears to be an extension?"
write(*,*)ident1
write(*,*)ident2
end program picky

i.e., the original test without PARAMETER, gives the error

pr77391_db.f90:2:25:

 character(len=*):: ident1="@(#)one(3f): with asterisk"
                         1
Error: Entity with assumed character length at (1) must be a dummy argument or a PARAMETER
pr77391_db.f90:3:25:

 character(len=:):: ident2="@(#)two(3f): with colon, which appears to be an extension?"
                         1
Error: Entity 'ident2' at (1) has a deferred type parameter and requires either the pointer or allocatable attribute
