Katherine and I belonged to the first batch of g77 "alpha" testers, back 
in September/October 1992 ...

What amazes me most is that Damian is able to *sell* Fortran courses. 
When I started my involvement with research in theoretical solid state 
physics as a graduate student, now 35 years ago, the modus operandi was 
that you had to learn Fortran (mostly 66, the 77 standard was only "out" 
for 2 years) by looking at the code the PhD students produced.

Andy Tanenbaum's group (part of the Mathematics Department of my Alma 
Mater, the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam) used an interpreted Pascal 
variant to teach programming; that course I followed in the summer of 
1976.  They used Unix on a PDP-11, so some of them must have been 
proficient in K&R C ...
