What is interesting (and largely what motivated my original post) is that I
have a number of colleagues who report more or less the same thing (and that
it has been the case since at least gfortran 4.4).

Thanks -- that makes sense. Next step will be to see what other options 
are available, and how to get PB to point at them. This sort of thing is 
trivial under Linux (based on more experience with Linux than Windows), 
but probably time I giured out same under Windows.
