null character without reason in written files

Yeah, I had read the whole thread. The sort of plotting described is part of the test we ran back then when we touched the PRNG (seems like eons ago!). I did some more tonight, checking for “graphical” patterns in the output (the eye is good at discerning some of that stuff), but really could not find any obvious bias.

I suspect the check unomas did was on another compiler, or a very old gfortran version.
