In our environment (weather forecasting and atmospheric research) I 
noticed that after gfortran became mature enough to compile WRF

from the nearby university who could actually program in Fortran and 
work with models (not only WRF, but our own also).  Before that, we had 
to formulate our problems for them so that they could use Matlab to 
solve them (i.e., toy problems).

So I wouldn't dismiss your suggestion :-)
