Comment on PETITION TO RETIRE FORTRAN (at JPL)

There's no central authority at JPL that tells us what languages we can 
or can't use.  Specific projects may have such rules (often based on 
what languages they choose to support... it is some effort for CM and 
builds to implement a new language) but people typically use whatever 
they need to get the job done.

In my specific area we have a lot of Fortran (77) code.  It is somewhat 
discouraged for new code, and we haven't implemented support in the 
builds for any Fortran 90 or later features, but it's not prohibited and 
we use gfortran all the time to build lots of production code.

Wondering why this came up?
