I think that DEC has invented it, but I am not completely sure – also 
IBM's xlf has it (at least nowadays). In any case, I don't think it is 
necessary to record the history of the extension in gfortran's manual.

(Actually, who invented the "Cray pointer"? Cray, DEC, or someone else?)

who has used – as undergraduate – "digital" (OSF/1) systems (besides 
FreeBSD [soon later converted to Linux] and Compaq's Tru64-Unix Alphas). 
(Compaq has bought DEC and renamed the OS, hence, OSF/1 == Tru64. Compaq 
itself was later bought by HP. And the DEC/Compaq Fortran compiler team 
was bought by Intel.)
