I think XCode will either give you a really old gfortran version
(4.2.x?), or none at all.

Yes, I think you should use Fink or MacPorts, or the binaries linked
at: http://gcc.gnu.org/wiki/GFortranBinaries#MacOS

AFAICT, gfortran works just as nicely on Mac OS as it does on most
other platforms. It is not recommended to use a version older than 4.6
at this point.

You can probably find such tutorials on the web (at least for Fortran
in general, but maybe also gfortran-specific), though I can not point
you to any specific ones right now.
