Dear Tobias,

Thanks for the prompt response.  I found version 4.6.2 and it does 
indeed fix almost all of the I/O differences.  It is still about 15% 
faster then the old f95 compiler from Lahey when not writing the 
large file  and only a few seconds slower when writing the large file. 
If version 4.7.0 makes further improvements, gfortran may leave 
f95 from Lahey in the dust:)  It is, of course, some years old,
but with such capable tools from gcc, why upgrade?
