old stale patch

hello all,

i posted this patch a long time ago:

the plan was to wait until the 4.5 branch was cut, thus giving this innocent looking change a long time of testing.

my thinking was 4.5 would be january or so.  or so.

i guess that is still the plan, i just don't want to lose it !!

so, if someone could review this after the 4.5 branch is cut, it would be much apreciated.  and of course, i will work diligently on any regressions it may cause.  diligently, but slowly :):)
