Trunk merged into fortran-exp branch

After some fixing of conflicts due to the new style of constructors I have 
successfully merged trunk into fortran-exp branch.

Regression tested on x86-64 and committed.

revision 156228.

For GFortraners, If you are touching anything with a value.constructor in trunk, 
drop me a note so I can plan on any conversions to the new constructor interface 
that may be needed.  The interface conversion is fairly straight-forward, but 
most likely has to be done manually.
