OK.  I see what James is trying to do.  Not sure it's valid.
Simplified testcase

program bug1
   use ISO_C_BINDING
   implicit none
   print *, transfer(32512, C_NULL_PTR)
end program bug1

It the C_NULL_PTR reference that is the root of the problem.
