Yes, !$ is already taken by OpenMP as well, for OpenMP conditional
compilation.
For continuation lines it doesn't need to be followed by whitespace.
E.g.
!$ subroutine &
!$GCC
!$ end subroutine
is valid OpenMP program (with -fopenmp the same as
subroutine GCC
end subroutine
and without -fopenmp just empty source.
