xplor-nih testsuite regressions with gcc 4.4

   I don't have a test case for the regression in libgfortran that breaks
xplor-nih, but I can define when the regression appeared. I don't see failure
in gcc 4.4 from 20090104 but I do see the regression in gcc 4.4 from 20090105
(so it is a very recent regression in libgfortran). I'll try regressing the change...

to see if this eliminates the xplor-nih failures.
