I have recompiled the entire code including the libraries and the buss
error disappeared. It looks like the problem was with the libraries,
but I do not know why.

To answer your questions, the "buss error" occurred on MacPro running
Tiger as well as on Powerbook G4 running Leopard.

This is from my Powerbook:
gfortran -v
Using built-in specs.
Target: powerpc-apple-darwin9.2.2
Configured with: /var/tmp/gfortran-20080510/ibin/../gcc/configure --
prefix=/usr/local/gfortran --enable-languages=c,fortran --with-gmp=/
var/tmp/gfortran-20080510/gfortran_libs --enable-bootstrap
Thread model: posix
gcc version 4.4.0 20080510 (experimental) [trunk revision 135154] (GCC)
