mod file compatibility between major releases

Hi all,

Some colleagues of mine were asking about the compatibility of gfortran
mod files between versions 4.2 and 4.3.  I was able to explain to them
some of the incompatibilities since I created some when I contributed
the iso_c_binding work to 4.3.  However, I don't know what efforts, if
any, there are for enabling mod files from different major versions to
interop in current or future releases of gfortran.  Are there any
efforts on this front, or is it expected that the sources be recompiled
by the next major version to get the new mod files?
